How to recover deleted emails? If you accidentally delete an email from your mailbox, you can easily recover that email from your junk or deleted folder. In some cases, you can even recover a deleted email if it has been deleted from your Deleted folder as well. In this guide, we will show you how to recover deleted emails from your mailbox.

We will show you tutorials for both Outlook mail client and Gmail.

How to recover deleted emails from Outlook

There are certain things that you should know before we proceed further.

  • Your email is automatically deleted from the Deleted Items folder after 30 days of deletion.
  • Emails that have been deleted from the Deleted Items folder are recoverable for 30 days.
  • Emails are automatically deleted from the Junk Email folder after 10 days.
  • If you do not see deleted messages for recovery, then there are high chances that they might have been permanently deleted from the Deleted Items folder or the Junk folder. We suggest that you do not use these two folders to store any of your messages.

Now let’s show you how to recover deleted email from Outlook.

Recover deleted email that is still in your Deleted Items folder or Junk folder

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. In the left panel, select Deleted Items folder or the Junk
  3. Perform any of the following:
  4. Deleted Items folder: Choose the messages that you want to recover. To recover all your messages, select the circle right next to Deleted Items heading and then click
  5. You can only select all messages if all the messages are displayed on the panel. This is to prevent accidental actions on hidden messages that are not displayed.
  6. To select an individual message, press Ctrl+ left click. Shift+ left-click selects all the messages between the first clicked message and the last clicked message.
  • Messages that were stored in a deleted folder can be moved to a non-deleted folder by selecting Move to.
  1. Junk folder: Select the item that you want to recover and then click Not Junk.

Recover an email that has been removed from your Deleted Items folder

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. From the left panel, go to Deleted Items
  3. At the top of the list of messages, select Recover items deleted from this folder.
  4. Select the items that you wish to restore. Then click
  5. You can only select all messages if all the messages are displayed on the panel. This is to prevent accidental actions on hidden messages that are not displayed.
  6. To select an individual message, press Ctrl+ left click. Shift+ left-click selects all the messages between the first clicked message and the last clicked message.

Where do the recovered emails go?

When you recover an email, it will go to the original folder from where it was deleted. If the original folder no longer exists, it will go to the following folders:

  1. Emails and messages will go to the
  2. The items belonging to the calendar will go to the
  3. Contact items will go to the Contacts
  4. Task items will go to the Tasks

Stop Outlook.com from emptying your Deleted Items folder every time you sign out.

The default settings of Outlook.com might force Outlook to delete and empty the Deleted Items folder each time you sign out from Outlook. To change this setting, perform the following:

  1. At the top of the panel, go to Settings and then View all settings.
  2. Select the option Message handling.
  3. Navigate to the When signing out
  4. Uncheck the box next to Empty my deleted items folder.

Once done, Outlook.com will no longer automatically clear the Deleted Items folder and all emails in the folder will remain intact even after you sign out from Outlook.com.

How to recover deleted emails from Gmail

On Gmail, the recovery process is simple. However, if you empty the Trash folder, then there is no chance that you can recover the email from your emptied Trash anymore. Therefore, be careful when emptying the Trash folder and make sure to leave the default deletion settings of the Trash folder where Gmail will automatically delete all items from the trash folder after every 30 days. That way, your emails will still stay in the Trash folder for up to 30 days and you can make up your mind whether to permanently trash the email or not.

To recover messages from the Trash folder, do the following:

  1. Open your web browser and visit
  2. On the left side of the window, scroll down and then select More > Trash.
  3. The Trash folder will open.
  4. Select the messages that you wish to move to your Inbox from the Trash.
  5. Click Move To.
  6. Choose the exact folder where you want to move the messages to.
