The display does not respond to touch, or intermittently fails to acknowledge a touch

If you own a touchscreen computer and the display does not respond to touches, first confirm that your computer has a touchscreen display by following the methods below:

  1. Look for the search bar and type View pen and touch info. If the message reads that no pen or touch is detected on your computer, then it signifies that your HP computer does not have a touchscreen.
  2. Verify the hardware specifications of your HP computer and check whether your display is touch-enabled. Go here: https://support.hp.com/in-en and enter your laptop’s serial number to check its specifications.
  3. Look at the details that are mentioned in the product package. If your computer has a touchscreen, the package should mention the words Touch or

Reinstall and enable the touchscreen driver on your HP computer

  1. Right-click on the Windows icon and go to Device Manager.
  2. Click to expand the Human Interface Devices
  3. First, try enabling the touchscreen device. Right-click on the Touch Screen device and select Tap the screen to see whether it is responding. If it doesn’t respond, go to step 5.
  4. If there is no option to enable the device, go to the next step.
  5. Right-click on the touch screen device and click Uninstall.
  6. Restart the computer. The driver will reinstall automatically on the next start-up of Windows.
  7. Tap the screen to see if it is responding or not. If it still does not respond, go to the next step.

Touch display configuration

  1. Look for the search bar on the taskbar and search for Calibrate the screen for pen and touch input.
  2. Go to Display tab and click
  3. Click Touch input.
  4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to identify your display as a touch screen.
  5. Tap the screen to verify if it is working or not. If it fails to work, proceed to the next step.

Install Windows Update

  1. Look for the search bar and search for Check for Updates.
  2. If there are any available updates, Windows will perform an automatic update.
  3. When the update process is complete, restart your computer for the changes to take place.
  4. If you are on Windows 8, in the Windows Update screen, click Show Updates and click Important updates are available.
  5. From the list that pops up, select all the driver updates from Important and Optional tabs and proceed with the update process by clicking Install.
  6. When the updates are complete, restart your computer for the changes to take place.
  7. If the screen fails to respond to touch, proceed to the next step.

Perform a test in HP Hardware Diagnostics

  1. Connect the AC power adapter to the computer.
  2. Press the power button and hold it for at least 5 seconds to power off the computer.
  3. Turn on the computer and keep tapping the Esc key continuously. When the Start-up menu appears, press the F2 key.
  4. On the HP Hardware Diagnostics page, select
  5. Select Touch screen.
  6. Click on Touch Pointer test
  7. Read the instructions clearly and then click Run once.
  8. You will be presented with several blocks on the display. Press the blocks one by one to erase them. The test will complete either when all the blocks have been erased, or after three minutes of testing.
  9. Click the Main menu and go to touch screen window.
  10. Click Drag and Drop test.
  11. Read the instructions and select Run Once.
  12. You will be presented with boxes and empty containers. You have to drag each box and drop it into an empty container. The test will complete either when all the containers are filled or after 3 minutes of the test.
  13. If the tests are successful but the touchscreen fails to respond during real usage, continue to the next step.
  14. If one of the tests fail, you will be provided with a 24-digit code or the failure ID. Furnish the code during your interaction with the HP customer care department.
  15. You may also retrieve the failure ID from the test log.

Verify the power management settings of the touchscreen

  1. Right-click on the Windows icon at the bottom left and select Device Manager.
  2. Click to expand the Human Interface Devices
  3. Right-click on the touch screen device and select
  4. Go to the Power Management Click to uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Then click OK.
  5. Put the computer to sleep and then wake it up. The touchscreen should work now, but if it still fails to work, continue to the next step.

Perform a hard-reset or full shut-down/restart on your HP computer

For HP laptop or notebook with a removable battery
  1. Shut down the laptop and disconnect it from AC mains or the power adapter.
  2. Detach the laptop or notebook from any docking station.
  3. Remove the battery from the battery hub of the notebook or laptop.
  4. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to discharge any static electricity.
  5. Now insert the battery in the compartment and do not connect any peripheral devices.
  6. Turn on the computer. If any boot menu opens, select Start Windows normally.
  7. Tap the screen to see if it works or not. If it doesn’t work, proceed to the next steps.
For HP laptop or notebook with non-removable battery

Note: Never try to detach a non-removable battery by dissembling your laptop as this will void the product warranty.

  1. Turn off the computer and disconnect it from any power source including the AC power adapter.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to reset the notebook/laptop. If this doesn’t work for you, go here: https://support.hp.com/in-en and select your laptop/notebook model to retrieve and go through the user manual of your laptop/notebook model.
  3. Plug in the AC power adapter and turn on the computer.
  4. Remember not to connect any peripheral devices such as external keyboard, mouse, printer, etc.
  5. If a startup menu opens, select the option Start Windows Normally and press Enter.
  6. Wait for the computer to fully load. Test whether the touchscreen is responding to your touches. If it doesn’t respond, proceed to the next steps.
For HP All-in-One Desktop computers
  1. Click the Windows icon
  2. Click on Power icon and select
  3. The computer will turn off and restart. Verify if your touchscreen is working. If it does not work, continue to the next step.
