Print or scan issues after Windows update

Print or scan issues after Windows update

However, with Windows update, there is a chance that the components may fail due to mismatch in driver version or some issues with the driver. To begin with the printer conflict on Windows 10, first, start by searching whether your printer model is supported by Windows 10 completely or not. To do this check manually, visit https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04658195. If your printer is listed there, then your printer is supported by Windows 10. In that case, you have to reinstall the Windows 10 drivers for the printer and attempt at printing again.

In case your printer is still malfunctioning, then it may be issues related to Windows updates. Windows has a real-time update facility that allows it to update the operating system in the background while you are doing other work on your computer. These updates had some bugs which prevented the printer and scanner to perform normally.

A short history of these series of issues are as follows:

  • Print spooler issues that prevent a page from printing successfully. This especially happened after the rollout of Windows Update on September 23rd, 2019, labeled as KB4522016.
  • Incompatibility with Windows OS for previous versions. The earlier version of Windows 10 had several issues with the printing service.
  • Another update, labeled as KB4524147, solved this issue for most users. However, the update had once again created major spooler issues with those who never faced such problems before. It created a bifurcation which led to a lot of confusion.
  • What was even worse, was that this item made the Start menu to malfunction. Several users were complaining that it generated a critical error for them when opening the menu.
  • Some other minor issues were still existent. Thereafter Windows did not release a fix for this because the issues were too complicated to be fixed.

To prevent such print or scan issues, there are several workarounds and HP officially listed some proper methods by which you can solve all these issues.

Uninstall the new updated version of Windows and restore to the previous version:

If you are one of the unlucky customers who is facing print or scan issues after updating to KB4524147, then you may follow the steps below to revert to the previous version of Windows:

  1. Open Settings in Windows 10.
  2. Click on Update and Security from the Settings page.
  3. Select Windows Update and click on View Update History option.
  4. Click on the option which says Uninstall updates.
  5. Now select the installed version of Windows which is KB4524147.
  6. Now click on Uninstall to uninstall the version KB4524147.
  7. After the update completes, click Restart Now to restart the system.

If the process is successful, the computer will roll back to build 18362.357 (KB4522016). If you are still facing the issues, then you can perform another rollback and restore it to Windows 10 build 18362.356.

Now, once you perform the rollbacks, Windows 10 will still have the ability to auto-update to a newer version. To disable auto-updates until there is a proper update available, you may temporarily switch off the auto-update feature in Windows 10.

  1. Open Settings and then go to Updates & Security.
  2. Click on Windows Update. Then go to Advanced Options.
  3. Under the Pause Updates settings, select the date till which the updates will remain suspended or paused.

When the above steps are complete, Windows will ensure not to make any auto-update before the mentioned date in Advanced Options. This will ensure that you do not face print or scan issues due to Windows update. If you want to manually update any module from the Windows Update screen, you may easily do so by manually selecting the modules on your own. Please make sure not to install or select the major or minor patches as mentioned before.
