How to set up HP Color LaserJet Pro M479

In this tutorial, we will guide you on how to unpack and set up HP Color LaserJet Pro M479 in stepwise format. If you have already set up the printer yourself, please skip to the driver installation step to install the drivers for HP Color LaserJet Pro M479.

Step 1: Unpack the printer

  1. First, choose a suitable site for placing and setting up the printer.
  2. The site should be sturdy, well-ventilated and dust-free. It should be away from direct sunlight.
  3. The temperature of the site should be between 15°C and 30°C.
  4. The humidity of the site should range between 30% and 80%.
  5. There should be sufficient space around the printer to open all the available doors and trays of the printer.
  6. If you are using a fax-based model of the printer, ensure that there is a phone socket available on the nearby wall.

Note: The phone cord is included only with HP M479 fax-based models.

  1. Open the packaging material and carefully take out the printer. Make sure that all the contents in the box are available as per the specifications as mentioned in the box or during the purchase of the printer.
  2. Remove the packaging material from the printer body. Remove the tapes and films from the printer control panel and inner body regions.

Step 2: Load Tray 2

  1. Take out the tray and remove it completely from the printer.
  2. Now using the adjustment latches, adjust the paper guides by squeezing them and adjusting them with the paper that is to be put in the paper tray.
  3. Load the paper stack into the tray.
  4. Now take the tray and carefully slide it back to the position in the printer.

Note:

  1. Do not adjust the guides too tightly against the paper stack. Adjust them to the indentations as marked on the paper tray.
  2. To prevent paper jams, do not overfill the tray. Adjust the paper guides to the correct widths. You will notice tray full indicators located on the tray. Make sure that the stack top remains below these full tray indicators.
  • If the tray is not adjusted correctly, the printer may display an error message during the printing process or while encountering a paper jam.

Step 3: Connect the network cable (this is an optional step)

This step is only required if you want to connect the printer to an existing local area network. If you want to connect the printer to an existing network, connect the network (Ethernet) cable to establish the connection between the printer and the network.

Step 4: Connect the power cable

  1. Take out the power cable from the packaging box.
  2. Connect the power cable between the printer and a well-grounded AC outlet.
  3. To prevent any damage or compatibility issues, connect the officially provided power cable between the printer and the AC outlet. Do not use third-party power cables.

Note: A network cable may not be included with the printer.

Step 5: Insert a USB drive to enable job storage (This is an optional step)

To enable job-storage printing capability, insert a properly formatted USB flash drive into the USB port which is located on the backside of the printer. The USB drive must be USB 2.0 or later with a minimum of 16 GB drive storage for maximum compatibility.

Step 6: Power on the printer

  1. Press the Power button which is located on the front-end of the printer.
  2. Wait for a time of 60 seconds before you continue. During this time, if the printer is connected to a network through the ethernet cable, the network will take its time to recognize the printer and assign a specific IP Address or hostname for the printer.

Step 7: Setting up the control panel

The control panel on the printer supports touchscreen gestures. To operate the control panel, use touch, swipe and scroll gestures.

  1. Turn on the control panel and follow the screen prompts to configure Language, Country/Region, Date/Time and Self-managed or IT-managed parameters.
  2. Self-managed: This is the optimized default settings for most users and includes a properly guided setup and automatic updates.
  3. IT-managed: This is an optimized setup for fleet manageability.
  4. If there are any additional prompts, follow them carefully to complete the setup of the control panel of the printer.

Note: You will be able to fully customize the Settings after this initial setup is complete.

For any advanced setup of the network-connected printers, enter the printer’s IP address in the address bar of a particular web browser after the installation of software is complete.

Step 8: Verify the printer’s functions and print a configuration page

  1. From the home screen on the control panel of the printer, swipe the tab located at the top of the screen downward to open the Dashboard.
  2. Touch the Setup icon.
  3. Go to the Reports Select the Printer Configuration Report.
  4. If your printer is connected to a network, find the IP address of the printer on the JetDirect
  • IPv4: If the IP address is 0.0.0.0 or 192.0.0.192, or 169,254.x.x (where x is any number), manually set up the IP address. Otherwise, the connection to the network is successful.
  • IPv6: If the IP address starts with “fe80:”. The printer should be able to make printouts. If not, then manually set up the IP address.

Step 9: Updating the firmware of the printer

HP will regularly update the features that are available on the printer through the firmware. So update the firmware of the printer to take maximum advantage of the currently offered features in the printer.

Note: Please check with the network administrator before you update the firmware of the printer. Also, make sure that there is no breakdown of electricity during the process of the firmware update as this might brick the printer.
