How to solve HP Laptop battery backup issue?

Various issues may arise with HP laptop battery backup. If you are facing any problem in charging or managing the backup potential of your HP laptop battery, then this is the only guide for you. Given below are a list of HP laptop battery backup problems and the procedures on how to solve the issues in the easiest possible ways.

Verify whether your AC power adapter is working properly

The foremost step is to verify whether the HP Laptop’s power adapter is working properly. Always remember to use genuine HP power adapter that came with your HP laptop. Remove the battery from your laptop, plug in the power adapter and run the laptop only on the power adapter. If the laptop switches on and functions properly for a significant duration, you can rest assured that your HP power adapter is working normally.

If the laptop fails to switch on or shuts down in between operation, your power adapter may be faulty and you need to replace it. Follow the steps below to order a new replacement adapter for your HP laptop:

  1. Look for your HP Laptop’s model number. If you are not sure about your laptop’s model number, you may visit https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00033108.
  2. Visit http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/wwhowtobuy.html
  3. Search for the correct battery part number based on your laptop’s model number.
  4. Order a replacement power adapter with the same part number as listed for your laptop’s exact model.

Please remember to buy genuine HP products. Unauthorized or third party power adapters can damage your laptop/laptop battery and decrease the life span of your laptop battery.

Alternatively, you can also use the UEFI Hardware Diagnostic test to verify your power adapter:

  1. Ensure that the power adapter is connected to your HP laptop.
  2. Press and hold the Power button on your laptop to shut it down.
  3. Turn on the laptop and continue pressing F2 Key until the screen displays- UEFI Hardware Diagnostic Test.
  4. In the menu, select Component Tests.
  5. Now, select
  6. In the new menu, select AC Adapter.
  7. Click on Run Once. Let the test finish.
  8. If the test result shows PASSED, your AC power Adapter is working optimally and you do not need to replace it.
  9. If the test result shows FAILED, it is time to get a new AC power adapter for your laptop. Note down the information that is displayed on the screen as it may be required when you contact HP customer support.

Battery stops charging before full capacity

It is always suggested to perform 4 to 5 deep-recharge cycles (fully discharge and fully charge the battery) as soon as you purchase your new laptop. This makes the battery indicator more accurate and gives you an exact reading of your battery levels and capacity.

To do a deep-recharge, continue using the laptop until it drains to the point of hibernation/shut-down. Once the laptop hibernates or shuts down, plug in the AC power adapter, and charge your laptop till it reaches 100%. You will be able to notice the change in the LED colour once the laptop battery is fully charged. Then power on your HP laptop and repeat the steps.

Battery not charging at all

If you have recently replaced your laptop battery but it fails to charge due to incompatibility, the problem may lie with the BIOS. A BIOS update can solve the issue. Since laptop BIOS are configured to recognize only OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) devices, if you have never updated your BIOS and have always used OEM battery, you will need to update your BIOS version for the replacement battery to properly communicate with the system. Third-party replacement parts are barely recognized by older BIOS versions.

After updating the BIOS, please keep the laptop plugged in for 12 hours and then you may continue to use it normally.

HP Battery Check errors: “Poor Health” or “Bad Cells” or “Replace battery”

HP Battery Check is an application that allows you to check the status of your laptop battery. Sometimes, after the replacement of a battery, this application can give inaccurate readings and generate random errors that may not be necessarily true. You will need to recalibrate battery and may also need to reinstall HP Battery Check for optimal performance. The steps below will guide you:

  1. Search for Add or Remove Programs. On the window, go through the list of applications and uninstall HP Battery Check.
  2. Download HP Support Assistant from http://www.hp.com/go/hpsupportassistant.
  3. Install HP Support Assistant. Go to My Devices
  4. Select your laptop from the device list.
  5. Click Troubleshooting and fixes. Then select Battery check.
  6. Please be patient while the process completes. HP Battery check will now display the results.

Battery draining even while charging

This is a common problem that occurs a lot in lightweight laptops or mid-range gaming laptops. If your HP power adapter is performing optimally, then it may be possible that your laptop is utilizing more power than the power adapter can deliver to the laptop. This happens when you have system-heavy programs running either in the foreground or the background. Generally, power-intensive applications such as games, editing software, rendering software, or benchmarking tools utilize more power than the power supply can deliver, resulting in overall power drainage. The laptop goes in a hybrid-power-usage stage and starts to draw the extra power from the battery while continuing to charge itself from the power adapter. It draws power from both the available power sources to continue operating instead of shutting down. As a result, the battery starts to drain even when charging.

To prevent such a scenario, stop using power-intensive programs on a lightweight laptop. If your laptop has a low-voltage processor (such as Intel U-series processor), then it will also have a low-wattage power adapter that generally maxes out at 65 watts. This is way under-powered to run heavy applications such as AAA-title games, 4K video editing programs and 3D model rendering studios.

Using these applications will not result in any serious trouble. However, your system will overheat, the processor will start to throttle due to higher temperatures and due to the lack of solid ventilation (as in gaming laptops), the inner heat may gradually damage the laptop battery in the long run. Therefore, it is always better to avoid running heavy programs on a lightweight laptop.

Battery fully charged but not working

A False Peak generally happens in a new laptop with a new battery or in an old laptop whose battery has been discharged a lot of times. In this case, the power adapter charges the laptop battery for only 15 minutes and then indicates that the battery is fully charged when it is not. If this happens, just leave the laptop in charging mode for a couple of hours. Then remove the battery and reset it to place. The battery should continue to charge normally, and the charging LED will indicate when the battery is fully charged and ready to use.
